Avonmouth Sea Cadets have been learning about the lives of their local firefighters after spending six months with the members of Green Watch at Avonmouth Fire Station.

The weekly sessions have resulted in the group completing a FireSkills course delivered by Avon Fire & Rescue Service – and on Monday the group performed a demonstration of their new skills during a passing out ceremony in front of proud family and friends.

Aimed at teenagers, a typical FireSkills course sees participants learning about fire safety, visiting specialist departments from within the service including the Arson Task Force and Control and completing a nationally-recognised Problem Solving qualification.

Crew Manager Nick Duncan, from Green Watch (pictured left), praised the group for their commitment to the course.

He said: “The Sea Cadets were keen to learn from our firefighters and were really enthusiastic about all aspects of the course. We hope they will take some of this knowledge, such as our fire safety messages, with them in their daily lives and, who knows, maybe some of them will be our firefighters of the future!”

Avonmouth Sea Cadets has had a long association with fire crews from Avonmouth, with cadets visiting the fire station and firefighters supporting Sea Cadet events.

Lieutenant Barbara Hillier, Avonmouth Sea Cadets Commanding Officer, said: “I have been very impressed with the help that the firefighters from Green Watch have given to the cadets throughout the FireSkills course.

“The cadets have really enjoyed their time at Avonmouth Fire Station and the course has really helped to improve their confidence, as well as their knowledge in fire safety.”
