Bristol firefighters will be out and about in the Easton and
Lawrence Hill areas of the city over the next few days as they take
part a special Week of Action.
Having teamed up with the Safer Bristol Partnership and other
local agencies, the aim of the event is to make the community safer
through tackling anti-social behaviour, cleaning up rubbish and
painting over graffiti.
The week, which will run from 9-16 June, will see a high-profile
presence from all the groups involved in the project.
Seven skips will be available for local people to dump their
bulky rubbish in and there will be a big litter clean-up.
Firefighters will also be on hand to talk to local people about
fire safety issues and offer them free Home Fire Safety Visits,
where smoke detectors are fitted and fire prevention tips
offered.
Steve Halstead, Community Safety Liaison Officer for Avon Fire
& Rescue Service said: “We at Avon Fire & Rescue Service
see this Week of Action as a great opportunity to engage with the
local community and find out how we can contribute to making the
community safer.
“We are keen to work with everyone we can to prevent the danger
and damage which house fires cause to local communities, which is
why we are involved in initiatives like this throughout the
year.
“Our Home Fire Safety Visits, where we fit free smoke alarms,
have already been a huge success and have saved lives. As well as
speaking to us during the Week of Action, people can also book a
free Home Fire Safety Visit by ringing 0800 1639 999.”
The week will also involve a day of fun activities for around
300 local children, with Avon Fire & Rescue Service’s
inflatable Hazard House taking centre stage to educate youngsters
about the dangers of fire in the home.
