Firefighters from Clevedon Fire Station have been demonstrating
the dangers of fire to pupils at Mary Elton Junior School.
Crews visited on Friday 6 November to mark the end of the
school’s Great Fire of London project, where the pupils have been
learning about the blaze in 1666, which started in Pudding
Lane.
As part of the project the pupils built a cardboard model of
London and firefighters were invited to talk to the pupils about
the dangers of fire and how it can spread rapidly.
They then helped the school recreate the Great Fire of London by
setting the pupils’ model alight.
Clevedon Fire Station Manager Anton Awramenko said: “This has
been a great project for us to get involved in as it provides us
with the opportunity to talk to young people about the dangers of
fire and to show how quickly it can spread and get out of
control.
“While at the school the firefighters also highlighted the
importance of working smoke detectors, which can offer an early
warning sign that a fire has broken out and give people the chance
to get out of their homes safely. If smoke detectors had been
available when the Great Fire of London started, it may not have
spread as rapidly and have caused as much damage as it did.”
