Avon Fire & Rescue Service received multiple 999 calls following a severe explosion at a telephone box.

Four appliances attended and on arrival found a red, cast iron, telephone box had been completely destroyed by the blast. Debris from the explosion was cast several hundred yards, causing damage to a window of a residential property. No one is thought to have been injured by the explosion.

Officers from Avon & Somerset Constabulary set up a 150 metre exclusion zone and evacuated a nearby pub and homes following concerns over a gas installation close to scene of the explosion. The area was later deemed safe by gas engineers and residents were gradually allowed back into their homes.

An investigation involving police scene of crime officers and fire investigation officers was launched during the evening in a bid to ascertain the cause of the explosion. Police investigators also returned to the scene on Monday morning to continue their search.
