Crews were called to rescue a parrot from a house after a coal fire sparked a blaze in the living room, quickly spreading to a sofa.

When firefighters arrived the elderly man, who lives in the house, was outside, but trying to get back in to rescue his parrot.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used one high pressure hose reel to put the fire out and rescue the parrot, which was suffering from smoke inhalation.

The RSPCA later attended and the parrot was given the OK.

The man, who was also suffering from slight smoke inhalation, was treated at the scene.
