A man was rescued by firefighters from the roof of a four-storey building after fire broke out in a block of flats in Old Market.

Crews used a turntable ladder to reach the 37-year old man, who had made his way to the roof after seeing smoke coming from the first floor of the property.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus (BA) and carrying a hose reel made entry to the building and carried out a search of second and third floors while another two firefighters wearing BA searched the first floor and extinguished the small fire using a 45mm jet.

The fire was contained to an area of the first floor of the building, however the communal stairways were heavily smoke logged which compromised the rescued man’s escape route. The man was taken to hospital by ambulance for a check up.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
