Weston-super-Mare
A 29 year-old woman and her 18 month-old baby
had a lucky escape after a fire at their home.
When firefighters arrived at the property both
occupants were already outside unharmed.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus
entered the house and found a fire in the ground floor living room
which they extinguished using a high pressure hose reel. A positive
pressure ventilation fan was then used to clear the smoke.
It’s thought the fire started accidentally
after candles were left burning on a windowsill near to vertical
blinds which caught fire.
Fortunately, the property was fitted with a
smoke alarm which activated and alerted the occupant, who was
sleeping at the time.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to
highlight the importance of working smoke alarms. They activate at
the first sign of fire and can give occupants vital extra minutes
to escape the premises, especially at night. Had there been no
smoke alarm fitted it may have been a different story.
Once the occupant was alerted to the fire she
managed to get herself and the baby out of the property and dial
999.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to
remind people to take care when using candles. Never leave them
burning unattended or close to furnishings as they can get very hot
and set fire to nearby furnishings.
