Labour intensive rescue after car collides with crash barrier

Sunday 22 November
M49 / M4 roundabout

Two appliances and the rescue tender from Avonmouth, and a pump and rescue tender from Temple where mobilized to this road traffic collision, which resulted in a car being embedded in a crash barrier.

It is believed the driver, a female in her 20s, had been travelling north on the M49 when she lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and collided with a crash barrier.

When crew arrived the entire driver side had been taken out by the crash barrier, on which the vehicle was now embedded.  Using all equipment available to them, crews had to firstly cut the vehicle away from the barrier, before they were able to take the roof off and free the casualty.  The operation was a labour intensive one, with all crew members needed, working closely with paramedics on scene.

The casualty was taken to hospital – but thankfully her injuries were not thought to be severe.
