Fryer fire prevented from spreading

Thursday 20 November

00.02 Hosey Walk, Withywood

A small fire which started in a deep fat fryer could have caused major damage to the kitchen of a Withywood home after the male occupant fell asleep while the appliance was cooking.

With no smoke detector in the property, it was fortunate that the man’s mother was awake in an upstairs bedroom and she was able to raise the alarm before the fire spread further.

Two firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus extinguished the fire using a high pressure hose reel and a CO2 extinguisher. The fire caused damage to the cooker and surrounding areas and the Positive Pressure Ventilation Fan was brought in to disperse heavy smoke which had built up in the property.

Following the fire, crews gave fire safety advice to the occupants and fitted smoke detectors.

Fires in the kitchen account for almost 70 percent of all house fires in the Avon area – you can find out more about staying safe in the kitchen in the ‘Your Safety’ area.
