Whitehall shop fire guts building

Wednesday 3 October 2007
11.17 Whitehall Road, Whitehall

An industrial unit and flats were destroyed when fire broke out on the ground floor of a workshop in Whitehall.

Thick smoke could be seen throughout the area when crews arrived on the scene to tackle the blaze, which took more than three hours to extinguish.  Concerns for the stability of the building prevented firefighters from entering and the hydraulic platform was drafted in to enable crews to tackle the fire from above.

Over 30 firefighters were called to the scene after extra fire appliances were called for and relief crews were brought in throughout the day. Structural engineers later deemed the building too unstable for Fire Investigation Officers to begin their work and scaffolding was erected the next day. Fire Investigation Officers were due to attend the site on Friday.
