Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) were notified by the
coastguard of a man, believed to be in his 40s, who was trapped by
mud on Uphill Beach, Weston-super-Mare.
Crews from Weston-super-Mare and Bedminster fire stations
attended, including AF&RS’s hovercraft.
The coast guard informed AF&RS that the tide had just turned
and was now rising. The man was trapped in mud approximately 100
metres from the beach.
The hovercraft allowed crews to safely approach the man and
rescue him from the mud. He was then returned to the beach where
crews passed him over to the care of the ambulance service.
Watch Manager Roy Kennedy from Weston station said “The tide was
incoming and he was exhausted, most likely hypothermic and would
not have made it back to shore without assistance/rescue. It was a
good job that someone spotted him.”
