Four rescued from hostel fire

10 September 2006
01.12 - Regent Street, Weston-super-Mare

This fire started in a flat of a three-storey building that had 30 residents. All the residents had to be evacuated and the crews from Weston-super-Mare and Winscombe stations rescued four. Eight breathing apparatus wearers were used and the flames were extinguished using a hose real.

Due to the nature and size of the incident the Red Cross Victim Support Unit attended and was able to provide temporary shelter, blankets and refreshments. This remained at the scene for about three hours until the residents were able to return to their flats. Because of concerns about emergency lighting and other fire protection, crews returned later to fit smoke detectors throughout the building.
