Firefighters fit smoke alarms at fire

Saturday 20 October 2007

Firefighters found one man outside this semi detached property when they arrived and learned that one man was still inside. Four firefighters in Breathing Apparatus (BA) went into the property and located a man in an upstairs room. The man was brought outside and both occupants were checked over by paramedics - although neither went to hospital.

It appears that the fire had started in a conservatory area downstairs. Fire investigation revealed the cause was accidental and almost certainly due to smoking materials. The fire, which caused severe damage, also spread to the kitchen. Two hose reels were used to extinguish the fire and a Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) fan was used to disperse smoke logging in the property.

During the fire, smoke spread into the neighbouring property and crews used the PPV fan to clear the air. While doing this they noticed that the family didn’t have any smoke alarms - so in the early hours carried out a free Home Fire Safety Visit, fitting free smoke alarms and offering safety advice to the occupiers.
