People across Bath & North East Somerset are being invited to find out more about their local fire station.

On Sunday 29 August firefighters at Bath Fire Station will be hosting a family fun day to demonstrate their work.

Members of the public will be able to have a look around some of the appliances at the Cleveland Bridge station, including the turntable ladder and the safety boat.

Firefighters from Bath have been specially trained to assist in large animal rescues and have been called to help horses stuck in ditches and cows in rivers. Some of the equipment crews use at these types of incidents will be on display, including a life-size horse mannequin which is used for training purposes.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service Station Manager for Bath, Gary Weeks, said: “This is a great opportunity for members of the public to come and find out more about life in the fire and rescue service.

“There will also be plenty of fire safety advice on offer with the chance to watch a dramatic cooking safety demonstration which highlights the dangers of cooking with oil.

“Firefighters will be on hand to talk to people about our Home Fire Safety Visits, where crews visit homes to talk to people about fire safety and the importance of working smoke alarms, which provide an early warning sign that a fire has broken out and can provide vital extra minutes to escape a property.”

Blue Watch Manager Shane Saunders said: “We are a service that is at the heart of the local community, so it’s great for us to be able to meet the people in Bath we are here to look after.

“Hopefully the open day will provide a good opportunity for people to find out a bit more about the work we do here in the city, pick up some useful tips on staying safe and provide a fun day out for the whole family.”

The open day takes place at Bath Fire Station, Cleveland Bridge, Bath, from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 29 August.
