Female treated for smoke inhalation after chip pan fire

Saturday 19 June

20.31 Axbridge Road, Knowle

A female who tackled a fire in a chip pan had to be treated for smoke inhalation after she carried the appliance out of her flat.

It appears the fire broke out after the chip pan overheated and caught fire while the occupant was asleep.

With no working smoke alarm in the property it was fortunate that the occupant awoke before the fire had a chance to spread. On seeing the fire, the female, believed to be in her 20s, put a damp tea towel over the chip pan and carried it outside before calling 999.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus (BA) entered the heavily smoke logged property to disperse the smoke using a positive pressure ventilation (PPV) fan.

As the female was showing signs of smoke inhalation, paramedics were called to check her over and she was treated at the scene.

Following the fire, crews fitted smoke detectors in the flat. Smoke detectors will pick up traces of smoke before you do, giving you an early warning to danger and time to escape to safety. Make sure you have one on every level of your home – and check them weekly.

If fire breaks out in your home, don’t try to tackle it. If you come across a chip pan fire, turn off the heat if it is safe to do, close the door on the fire, leave the building and call 999.
