Feature - Chernobyl youngsters visit fire station

Friday 21 July 2006 - 09.00hrs

On Friday 21 July, firefighters from Green Watch welcomed some special guests to the fire station at Temple Back.  The firefighters also carried out a number of displays and treated their guests to a traditional fire service breakfast.

The special guests were children from Belarus, where families, and especially young people, are still affected by the Chernobyl disaster, despite it happening 19 years ago.

The children have been visiting the UK with the help of the East Bristol branch of the Chernobyl Children Lifeline charity.

Steve Bagg, Station Manager at Temple Fire Station said,  “We know that the children have suffered a lot as a result of the Chernobyl disaster and that they visit the UK to improve their health, so we are only too happy to help out.

"The disaster is also close to our hearts because a number of firefighters were killed and injured during the tragedy.

"Everyone has had a brilliant day today and we hope the children will go away with many happy memories of their visit."
