Electrical fault results in bedroom fire

Tuesday 17 November

06.23 St Aidans Close, St George, Bristol

An electrical fault in an airing cupboard is thought to be behind a fire which badly damaged the top floor of a house in St George.

When firefighters arrived on the scene they discovered the fire itself was contained to a bedroom in the property, but the heat and smoke generated from the fire had caused damage to the rest of the floor.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus (BA), one high pressure hose reel and a jet were brought in during the course of firefighting operations.

While there was a working smoke detector on the ground floor of the property, a detector had not been fitted on the level where the fire broke out. Fortunately the occupant – a male in his 30s – realised all was not well in the house and was able to escape to safety.

As the door to the bedroom was open at the time of the fire, the rest of the top floor was damaged by smoke and heat.

Working smoke detectors will pick up traces of smoke before you, giving you and your loved ones precious time to escape to safety. Make sure you have a smoke detector on every level of your home and check it every week. Read our leaflet on smoke detectors (PDF 78kb, opens in a new window)

If you come across a fire in your home, close the door if it is safe to do so, and then leave the property. Closing the door will help slow the spread of the fire and the resulting smoke and heat damage fire can cause. Read our leaflet, Close the Door! (PDF 534kb, opens in a new window)
