Avon Fire & Rescue Service’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer is
joining other brave fundraisers in a charity abseil at Uphill
Quarry this weekend.
DCFO Jerry O’Brien, who lives in Winscombe, was keen to join the
charity event for two reasons. Half the money raised will go to
Sandford Primary School Parent Teacher Association. Jerry’s
children are pupils at the school.
The other half of the funds raised will go to another cause
close to AF&RS’s heart, Gambia and Avon Fire Services in
Partnership (GAFSIP). The charity is support by AF&RS and works
to send old fire appliances, books, computers and other useful
supplies to the Gambia. It also helps to train firefighters in the
Gambia.
The abseil takes place on Sunday 1 October, from 10am-4pm at the
quarry. The event is being run by Mendip Outdoor Pursuits School
staff.
Other fire and rescue service staff will be joining Jerry as he
goes over the edge. Firefighters and staff will also be attending
the event, with a number of fire safety displays as well as fire
appliances. Food and drink will also be on sale.
Jerry will be taking the plunge at
1.30pm.
