Firefighters from Weston-super-Mare and Yatton fire stations were involved in a wide scale search to find two people whose car had ended up in a rhyne.

The crews joined police officers in the search around the Yatton Moor and Congresbury areas after the male driver involved in the single vehicle road traffic collision rang 999. The caller was unsure of his exact location, but reported the car had finished partially submerged in a rhyne with a female passenger still inside the vehicle.

Following a search lasting two hours, the emergency services located the car on Broadstone Lane near Kingston Seymour. Fire crews assisted the female passenger to safety; she had remained in the car which was submerged in water to the level of the windows. The male driver was out of the vehicle when fire crews arrived. Both people, aged in their 20s, were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of the cold.
