Two people have been treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in a basement flat.

When firefighters arrived they found an 80-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man already out of the property. They were given oxygen therapy and taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation.

Five firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the premises and found a fire in the storage area of a basement flat. Using two high pressure hose reels firefighters extinguished the fire.

It appears the fire started after smoking materials were not properly extinguished.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind people to always ensure they fully extinguish cigarettes and matches after use as they can smoulder for a number of hours causing heavy smoke logging.

Fortunately no one was hurt.
