Candle starts blaze

10 December 2007
07.36 Downend Park Road, Downend

A passer-by alerted crews to this fire, after seeing smoke pouring from the back of the house.

When crews arrived on the scene they found a fire in the bathroom of the property, which had been started by a candle and spread to the curtains.

The 68-year-old man, who lives in the house, had tried to tackle the blaze himself and was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

There were no smoke detectors in the property, so crews fitted a number of the devices after the fire was out.
