A man in his 30s
was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after
attempting to put out a fire which had broken out in his
bedroom.
Firefighters
arrived on the scene to find flames coming out of the window of a
second floor flat and the male occupant and a female resident from
the flat below outside. Crews set up a jet to fire water on the
blaze from outside while four firefighters wearing Breathing
Apparatus entered the property to tackle the fire using
two high pressure hose reels.
The bedroom and
hallway of the flat were badly damaged by the fire and the
properties below, another flat and a fish and chip shop, suffered
water damage.
It appears the
fire started while the man was asleep after a candle which had been
left burning caught light to nearby materials. Fortunately the man
was alerted to the incident by his smoke detector.
When using candles
never leave them unattended and make sure they are placed in a
suitable holder. Learn more about candle safety.
