Press Release - Bristol firefighter taking part in the challenge of a lifetime

Thursday 20 March 2006 - 09.00hrs

A Bristol firefighter has been chosen to take part in a tough racing challenge.

Danny Munden, aged 38, is a member of Green Watch at Temple Fire Station and has been selected to take part in the Polar Race. Danny, who lives in Fairfield Road, Montpelier, will undertake the challenge in April next year.

Teams of two, three or four will race on foot or ski from the former North West Territories of Canada, 400 miles to the finish line at the North Magnetic Pole.

The race is expected to take 30 days, with competitors fending for themselves in temperatures as low as –40 degrees centigrade. They will have to haul their food and equipment on a sledge behind them.

The event is being organised by modern day adventurer Josh Wishart, along with four colleagues – Simon Marshall, Neill Williams, Gary Walker and David Hempleman-Adams

Danny has already started work both on his rigorous training schedule and in finding sponsors.

He said: "I am really looking forward to taking part in this challenge although I have a lot of hard training ahead of me.

"I am hoping to raise money for two really good causes and I would love to hear from anyone who can help me out with sponsorship."

Current sponsors include: Bristol Bus and Coach Sales and Gullivers Truck and Van Hire.
