A woman who had been overcome by smoke in her flat has
been rescued by firefighters.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service was called to the four-storey
building after fire alarms had started activating. On arrival crews
found residents from flats on the building's upper floors had
evacuated, however there were concerns for a female resident of a
smoke-logged basement flat.
Firefighters broke down a door to gain access to the flat,
where they found a woman in her 40s slumped over a kitchen table.
As she was carried to safety she began to regain consciousness
and was attended to by paramedics on the scene.
One hosereel was used to extinguish the minor fire which was
started by a saucepan left on the stove. A positive pressure
ventilation fan was used to clear smoke.
Fires that start in the kitchen are the single
biggest cause of domestic fires. It is important to
remember that cooking should never be left unattended and working
smoke alarms should be installed in all homes.
