AF&RS joins forces with Coastguard and RLNI in search for missing men

Tuesday 23 June

23.43 Weston Bay, Uphill, Weston-super-Mare

Firefighters and AF&RS's hovercraft from Weston-super-Mare were called to assist in the search for two men who went missing after going for a late night swim.

A land and sea search area covering the whole of Weston Bay was launched by HM Coastguard in an attempt to find the two men, believed to be in their 30s.

On board the hovercraft, three firefighters and a coastguard officer used flares and highbeam lights to conduct a search of the shore line, while RNLI lifeboats and a rescue helicopter from RNAS Chivenor conducted searches further afield.

The search for the men was halted at low tide, around 3am, and was resumed by HM Coastguard at 5am.
