Electric blankets

Snowflakes We want you to Keep Warm, Keep Safe this festive season, but electric blankets can be a fire risk.

If you use an electric blanket you should have it electrically tested when it is three years old, then once a year after this.

Older blankets can have limited or no protection against overheating, so if they fail and continue to heat up, they can cause a fire. Modern electric blankets have an automatic cut off.

Make sure you do not fall asleep with your electric blanket on in case it fails in the night, and never have a hot water bottle in the bed at the same time as an electric blanket – even if it is turned off.

When storing an electric blanket do not fold it as this can damage wiring. Store blankets flat or rolled up instead.

Contact your local council to see if they are holding electric blanket tests in your area.
