Message from the Chief Fire Officer / Chief Executive

Kevin Pearson

Firstly, can I welcome you to the Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) website - thank you for visiting us.  We hope that you enjoy ‘surfing’ the site, and find it both informative and interesting.

AF&RS is a progressive modern-day fire and rescue service, leading the way in many areas of ‘Preventing, Protecting and Responding’ to both fires and other potentially live threatening events and incidents.

The fire and rescue service is no longer just about responding.  A vast majority of our time is spent preventing fires and accidents in the community and protecting those who live, work and visit it through our educational work.

For example, the work we carry out with young people through schemes such as our Fire Cadets, FireSkills and Sparks programmes are nationally recognised as leading the way forward in educating young people to the dangers of arson, hoax calls and reckless driving.  The centre for our youth work is the Youth Development Centre at Bedminster Fire Station - the first dedicated fire and rescue service youth centre in the country.

Our Community Safety teams and firefighters visit groups, such as senior citizen forums and care organisations, often in partnership with colleagues in the other emergency services, to promote campaigns covering topics such as fireworks, candles, smoking and cooking.  They educate people about the importance of working smoke alarms, promoting our free Home Fire Safety Visit service.

The Arson Task Force is another nationally recognised project for Avon Fire & Rescue Service.  The team’s work with Car Clear has resulted in a massive reduction in vehicle arson across the service area - resulting in Government recognition and international interest.

We are extremely proud of our South West Command Development Centre (SWCDC). The history of the site, together with the 'state of art' facilities and technology make Avon Fire & Rescue Service a leader in command development and training.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service is a lively, challenging, yet rewarding place to work - we consider ourselves a family all aiming towards the same goal.  Our mission is to improve public safety through prevention, protection and response.  Our vision is for our staff to be motivated and inspired to make all of our communities safer.  Underpinning all of this are our values, of integrity, trust, respect, learning, can-do and openness.

Please browse our website and learn more about what we can do for you.  We are your service and here to help you.

AF&RS welcomes your thoughts and ideas on the website and the information we are providing.  If you have any comments please use the online website feedback form.
